The Unani System of medicine owes, as its name suggests, its origin in Greece. Its is synthesis of the Greek and the Arab Systems, and its fundamental theory is that four Humors are present in the Human Body, Blood, Phelgm, Black bile and Yellow bile. Normal balance of these Humors is essential to keep the human body healthy and normal. Any imbalance or abnormality in Humors results in diseases. The Unani Physicians restore the normalcy of Humors by Herbal Medicines.
The State Council of Medicine, West Bengal established by an Act XLV of 1979 viz. Paschim Banga Unani System of Medicine Act, 1979. State Council of Unani Medicine, West Bengal started its work from 117, Rabindra Sarani, Kolkata-700073. The office was shifted at Mahindra Mansion, 79B, Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata-700073 on 24th March, 1985. On the basis of this Section 21(2) of the above said Act, the State Council of Medicine, West Bengal registered 4905 practitioners on practicing ground. The Council also registered 252, 305 till date. The Council receives grant in aid from the State Government for the maintenance of the Council every year.
The State Council of Unani Medicine West Bengal started one year Certificate Course in Unani Pharmacy started in 2008 with 302 students but the said Course could not continued just often completion of the paid Course. In 2016 the Add hoc Committee again decided to reopen the paid Course and from November, 2016 302 students are completed the Course.
Previously the Council proposes for opening of Unani Dispensaries in the different Districts of West Bengal in the slum areas of Rural and Urban areas. There are three Unani dispensaries are running in West Bengal such as Calcutta Unani Mobile Dispensary, Howrah Unani Dispensary and Asansol Unani Dispensary and one Unani Dispensary has already been sanctioned at Murshidabad but yet to open. There are ten Unani Dispensaries are pending under consideration in different district of West Bengal. The Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of West Bengal recruited qualified Unani Physicians under N.R.H.M Project in2011 and also recruited Unani Physicians under R.C.H Project in 2013 and it is continued till date.
